École Française d'Extrême Orient

A century of field research in Asia

L'École Française d'Extrême Orient (EFEO), founded in 1900 in Saigon, is dedicated to interdisciplinary research on Asian civilizations, from India to Japan. The EFEO is present, thanks to its 18 research centers, in 12 Asian countries. This specificity allows its 42 permanent researchers (anthropologists, archaeologists, linguists, historians, philologists, sociologists of religions, etc.) to be performing their studies on the ground, and to entertain a network of local cooperation and international exchanges between Orientalist scientists.
